Experiences of Discrimination and Exclusion

Exclusion means “doing borders”. Those who exclude establish a border between themselves and others. Exclusion mechanisms take place not only within societies, but also at the external borders of certain nation states (and unions of states) or far from these borders. What is generally regarded as discrimination and what is considered socially permissible or not legally actionable unequal treatment depends on the respective historical context and has been the subject of increasingly controversial debate since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights came into existence in December 1948. Structural exclusion is accompanied by a stereotyping discourse that reduces people to their “flight” and robs them of their complex individuality and humanity.
