The Decision to Flee and Experiences of Flight

On a biographical level, the great array of reasons why people leave their homes and flee becomes abundantly clear. Flight takes place in stages and can often last several years before people are able to find a place where they think themselves safe and able to imagine a future. The reasons behind the compulsion to leave one’s home are manifold: besides such recognized reasons for forced migration such as fleeing persecution based on ethnic, religious, political grounds, as well as belonging to a social group, which is recognized by the Geneva Refugee Convention; hunger, extreme lack of prospects and environmental disasters as grounds for flight are also becoming widespread.
